Peace and Safety for Your Twentieth of January: Symposium in Athens

Peace and Safety to the Epicureans of today, no matter where you might be!

The year 2015 is shaping up to be one of great developments in our still-small Epicurean community.  For today’s post I want to highlight next month’s Fifth Pan-Hellenic Symposium of Epicurean Philosophy, to be held February 7-8 in Athens.  Here is a copy of their meeting notice – click on it for a larger view.

I don’t have an English copy of the agenda for the upcoming meeting, but you can read – in English – about the agenda for last year’s conference at this page.  No doubt this year’s conference will be similar to those in the past, which reports tell me have been very successful.

In years past the Athens group has posted some of their proceedings to Youtube, and they have been interesting to view even for those of us who cannot speak Greek.  I will pull together links to any pictures or videos I can and report back after the conference.

We have eleven months left in 2015 to plan for meetings in other areas of the world, even if not on so large a scale as Athens.  I hope by the end of the year we can predict for the future that 2014 was the last year that the Athens conference was the only conference in the world devoted to Epicurus.

As Seneca recorded: Sic fac omnia tamquam spectet EpicurusSo do all things as though watching were Epicurus!

And as Philodemus wrote: “I will be faithful to Epicurus, according to whom it has been my choice to live.”
