Epicurus' Letter to Pythocles

The Letter to Pythocles is contained in the biography of Epicurus by Diogenes Laertius.

This letter expands on the principles set forth in the Letter to Herodotus by extending them to the phenomena we see in the sky.  It is devoted to the subject of explaining the natural means by which these things we see in the sky probably occur, without the participation of any supernatural forces.

Because our evidence on these matters is limited, this letter explains how we must be satisfied with developing alternative explanations of these phenomena, and how we cannot arbitrarily select one of many options if all are consistent with the evidence.
